### Greg and Andrea are trying to find out how long it takes amylase, a digestive enzyme found in saliva, to break down a sample of starch. They put their sample in a beaker and covered it with their own saliva. After allowing it to sit on the lab table for 1 hour they measured the remaining surface area of the starch. What is the best way they could improve their experiment?

The answer is: the amount of the saliva samples must stay consistent while the amount of starch must vary.

The amount of the saliva samples must stay consistent because amylase, present in the saliva, is the independent variable which affects the dependent variable - the amount of starch. So, amylase will do its job while remaining surface area of the starch will depend on the starting amount of the starch.

### Why are many cells wired together in a typical photovoltaic panel

The answer is because they will increase the yield of electricity.

A photovoltaic panel is able to convert light into electricity. This is because it consists of many cells wired together. The cells are wired in a series and/or parallel to produce the required voltage and subsequently increase the amount of electricity generated. The number of cells depends on the amount of electricity required.

- Spirochetes - spirals.

If a student drew a circular shape, this probably represented sphere. Therefore, the shape of seen bacteria was spherical which suggests that the bacteria must be cocci.

### Which issue is a negative effect of cell technology on society? Immortal animal cell lines can be used to model human cells. The use of human cells in research can lead to ethical problems. Organ culture increases the time between donation and transplant. People are more aware of the results of cell technology research.

The use of human cells in research can lead to ethical problems

Because the new use of cells most often lead to this "grey area" in ethics as it is a new area of science and our society is not yet conditioned to this scientific breakthough. As there is no "moral code" on human cell use, ethical objections can arise and led to conflicts.

When looking at the other options they do not cause negative effects on society

1)
Immortal animal cell lines can be used to model human cells.
----> This technology is not yet developed so it cannot be negative (yet)
2) Organ culture increases the time between donation and transplant.
-----> Organ culture are actualy
an alternative for organs from donors, and will not increase the time btween donation and transplant
3) People are more aware of the results of cell technology research.
-----> Awareness of research lead to greater understanding and unity

### Biologists use ball-and-stick models to study complex molecules by representing atoms with balls and bonds with sticks. DNA is a biological molecule that contains millions of atoms. What is a limitation of using a ball-and-stick model for DNA?

Most models can't incorporate all the details of complex natural phenomena. For example, when measuring distances around the Earth it's convenient to model the Earth as a sphere, but this doesn't incorporate variations in distance because of mountain ranges, valleys and other topological features the traveler must traverse. Incorporating these additional details would make the model too complex for easy use. Since models must be simple enough that you can use them to make predictions, they often leave out some of the details.

ALSO.

The conformation of molecules are based on probability. It fails to take into account the electronegativity of individual atoms. And it is ineffective in showing inorganic interactions with metals and such.

### Explain the different Cell Cycle stages and what event occurs with each one.

The cell cycle is divided into two main stages: the interphase or nondividing stage and the mitotic or dividing stage. In interphase is the stage where a cell prepares itself by replicating its own genetic information and all of its organelles. The cell goes through this period of growth before it undergoes mitosis. The following are its three important phases. Gap 1 (G1) phase in the first gap, the cell increases in size preparation for division. During this stage, the cell prepares itself for DNA synthesis. Synthesis (S) phase DNA synthesis (replication) occurs. Chromosomes are also replicated which later on will become sister chromatids. Gap 2 (G2) phase this is the second gap. The cell continues to grow and synthesize RNA and proteins. There is also a G2 checkpoint to see if the cell is already prepared for mitosis. Some cells undergo the cell cycle only once, or they stop dividing. These cells will go to the Gap 0 (G0) phase, the resting phase of the cell. Nerve and blood cells remain in G0 phase for the rest of their lives. Thus, nerve cells and blood cells do not undergo mitosis. In mitosis once the cell is ready for cell division it will go to the next stage- mitosis. Mitosis is the process of nuclear division of a cell. Prophase is the of mitosis that takes up around 50-60 percent of total time for mitosis. It is subdivided into three substages: early, middle, and late prophase. In early prophase, chromosomes condense and start to coil up into short rods, the nuclear membrane disappers, and the centrioles appear and move toward the opposite sides (the poles) of the nuclues. In the middle prophase, mitotic spindle fibers are formed between the centrioles.Asters also formed on each side of the nucleus. The centrioles move towrdsthe poles. The nuclear membrane dissolves. In late prophase, chromosomes are attached to the centrioles through the spindle fibers. In metaphase, the centrioles have completed their migration toward the poles. The double-stranded chromosomes are aligned at the cells's midplane (equator). The centromeres of each chromosome are attached to the fully formed spindle fibers. In anaphase, the centromeres, followed by the chromatids, are separated when the spindle fibers shorten and pull the chromatids toward the end of the poles. The chromatids are now called chromosomes. Telophase is the last stage of mitosis which is usually referred to as the "reveres prophase"  stage. In this stage, the spindle fibers disappear, the nuclear membrane and nucleoli reappear, and the chromosomes uncoil. Cytokinesis, follows mitosis. In animal cells, a cleavage furrow is formed until the membrane separates, forming two daughter cells. In plant cells, a cell plate is created that eventually develops into a cell wall.

### Which of the following processes releases energy to be used by a cell? A. a phosphate group is added to atp to form adp. B. a phosphate group is added to adp to fprm atp c. a phosphate group is removed from adp to form atp D. a phosphate group is removed from atp to form adp

D. a phosphate group is removed from atp to form adp

ATP usually releases energy by breaking down the weak phosphate cell present.  The energy released due to the breaking down of the phosphate cell is then utilized. The ATP is converted to ADP. Whenever a cell feels the necessity for energy it releases a phosphate to gather the energy. It is an automatic and ongoing process. The weak bond between the second and the third phosphate is always targeted for turning ATP to ADP. This is the reason ATP is considered the main energy currency for the cell.

### A cell of an organism has four chromosomes. It undergoes a process at the end of which two daughter cells are produced. Each daughter cell has four chromosomes. Which process is described?

Mitosis

Mitosis
and meiosis are simply cell division processes that occurs differently, they're characteristically divergent from each other according to their function and structure. Mitosis is the cell division that happens in all cells in the human body except sperm and egg cells. They produce diploid cells. Meiosis on the other hand is responsible for the cell division of the gametes, spermatogenesis (sperm cells) and oogenesis (egg cells), such haploid cells.
