Anyone read the short story "The Swimming Contest" by Benjamin Tammuz? I need a short summary.

It begins as the narrator, the young Jewish child of a widowed doctor, is summoned with his mother to the summer home and orange groves of a grateful Arab patient, who is called “the grandmother.” The narrator loses a swimming match to the 19-year-old Abdul-Karim, a member of “the grandmother’s” family, and proclaims that when he grows up he will win. The swimming race becomes a kind of metaphor for relations between the land’s Jews and Arabs, which painfully disintegrate before our eyes. The tale finishes in 1948, in the same orange grove in which it began.

An example showing Brutus as traitor and as a patriot is completed for you as an example.

Answer: According to the previous unit he play both roles. This conclusion came from the fact that he killed his own friend Caesar, who considered Brutus a good friend, and said that he had done this act in order to save Rome from dictatorship.

#2) Identify if it supports that Brutus is a traitor or patriot, and explain why you think the way you do.

Answer: Both of the roles are played by Brutus. But in my opinion he was a traitor because he killed his own friend and then used the excuse of saving Rome from dictatorship. Also after killing Caesar and being totally okay with it he then went on to try to convince the townspeople to believe he was a good person and a noble being.

In at least 100 words, discuss how Thoreau employs literary allusions to support his argument in Civil Disobedience. Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

Thoreau now turns to his personal experiences with civil disobedience. He says that he hasn't paid a poll tax for six years and that he spent a night in jail once because of this. His experience in jail did not hurt his spirit: "I saw that, if there was a wall of stone between me and my townsmen, there was a still more difficult one to break through, before they could get to be as free as I was." Since the State couldn't reach his essential self, they decided to punish his body. This illustrated the State's ultimate weakness, and Thoreau says that he came to pity the State. The masses can't force him to do anything; he is subject only to those who obey a higher law. He says that he has to obey his own laws and try to flourish in this way. But when the sun was getting low and everything seemed most bewildering and discouraging, I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of a stream, growing not in the ground but on a bed of yellow mosses in which its small white bulb had found a soft nest and from which its one leaf and one flower sprung. The flower was white and made the impression of the utmost simple purity like a snowflower. No other bloom was near it, for the bog a short distance below the surface was still frozen, and the water was ice cold. It seemed the most spiritual of all the flower people I had ever met. I sat down beside it and fairly cried for joy. Choose two of the following phrases Muir uses in his writing about the Calypso Borealis and explain how these words reveal his attitude about nature. on a bed of yellow mosses in which its small white bulb had found a soft nest made the impression of the utmost simple purity like a snowflower the most spiritual of all the flower people I sat down beside it and fairly cried for joy.

QUESTION POSTED AT 18/02/2020 - 12:50 PM

Read the excerpt from Grendel. Then they would fight. Spears flying, swords whonking, arrows raining from the windows and doors of the meadhall and the edge of the woods. Horses reared and fell over screaming, ravens flew, crazy as bats in a fire, men staggered, gesturing wildly, making speeches, dying or sometimes pretending to be dying, sneaking off. Sometimes the attackers would be driven back, sometimes they’d win and burn the meadhall down, sometimes they’d capture the king of the meadhall and make his people give weapons and gold rings and cows. It was confusing and frightening, not in a way I could untangle. I was safe in my tree, and the men who fought were nothing to me, except of course that they talked in something akin to my language, which meant that we were, incredibly, related. I was sickened, if only at the waste of it: all they killed—cows, horses, men—they left to rot or burn. Which statement best describes Grendel’s perspective? He enjoys watching the violent men kill one another. He admires the powerful weapons and strong men. He wishes to be part of the excitement somehow. He feels disgusted by the wasteful nature of war.

Answer:

The answer is letter D) He feels disgusted by the wasteful nature of war.

Explanation:

In the famous epic poem "Beowulf", Grendel is described as a man-eating monster, incapable of feeling, whose only purpose is to kill. He and his mother end up being killed by the hero Beowulf.

However, when we read the novel Grendel, by John Gardner, a new light is shone onto the character. The story is now told from Grendel's perspective, and he is not a monster as portrayed in Beowulf. He has feelings, he suffers; but since he has a monstrous appearance and seems incapable of expressing himself, he is misunderstood.

In the excerpt we are studying here, Grendel watches while men kill each other and other beings. He does not admire their violence or their weapons, nor does he wish to be a part of it. Grendel is practical, and sees it as a waste that what is killed is left to rot. To his mind, since they have been killed, those carcasses should now serve as food. This excerpt doesn't show it, but the next line would actually picture his practical nature by his attempt to save what he considers to be food:

I was sickened, if only at the waste of it: all they killed—cows, horses, men—they left to rot or burn. I sacked all I could and tried to store it, but my mother would growl and make faces because of the stink.

Which details should you look for in determining the setting of a story? Check all that apply. 1) the story’s time period 2) where the author lives 3) the characters’ environment 4) how long the story is 5) where the story takes place

Answer:

1) the story’s time period.

3) the characters’ environment.

5) where the story takes place.

Explanation:

The setting is the time and the place in which a story takes place. The setting can sometimes be carefully described, while other times it is only implied in a narrative. In order to establish the setting of a particular story, we need to look at both the story's time period and the place where the story takes place.  Moreover, if it is unclear what the exact elements of this are, we can also look at the character's environment.
