QUESTION POSTED AT 20/01/2020 - 01:00 PM

What rule applies to this word? desire Group I. If the root is a full word, the ending is usually -able. Group II. When the root is a full word except for a final e, the forms usually are spelled with -able. Group III. The suffix -able always follows i. Group IV. When the root has other forms built on the letter a, the -able form is used. Group V. When the root ends in hard c or hard g, -able is used. Group VI. When the root is not a full word,-ible is used. Group VII. When the word has an immediate -tion form, -ible is used. Group VIII. When the root ends in ns, miss, or soft c or g

The correct answer is Group II. "When the root is a full word except for a final "e", the forms usually are spelled with -able".

Explanation:

In language, a root word refers to the basic unit of a word that cannot be reduced to a smaller unit. Because of this, new words can be formed by adding prefixes or suffixes which are letters or syllables placed before or after root words. However, in most cases, the use of suffixes and prefixes follow strict grammatical rules that work as a guide to add a prefix or suffix depending on the root word. This is the case of the suffix "-able" that means capable of and which is added to root words according to different rules described in the question which classifies root words according to eight different groups and describes in which way should the suffix "-able" added according to the features of the root word.

For the word "desire" which means  the action of wishing something, the rule that applies to this word is the one described in Group III or "When the root is a full word except for a final "e", the forms usually are spelled with -able" considering the word desire is a full word that cannot be reduced to shorter units and it also ends in "-e", therefore the suffix is added by omitting the "-e" which means the word becomes "desirable" and means  something attractive or capable of being desired. Thus, the rule that applies to the word "desire" is Group II.

Lea wants to revise the final sentence by adding a transition at the beginning. Which are the best choices? Check all that apply School uniforms can help students from feeling like they cannot keep up. Some students come to school in jeans that cost $200. Yet, twenty-five percent of the students at our school qualify for free lunches. Right now, students are divided into two groups: those who can afford designer brands and those who cannot. This is unfair. Students should wear uniforms to create an equal environment. As a result, However, For example, Similarly, Therefore

The best choices that could function as transitions at the beginning of the final sentence are "as a result" and "therefore".

Transitions are words or phrases used to connect two ideas in order to avoid abrupt jumps between them. Moreover, transitions give cohesion to the text and help the reader to make connections between sentences and paragraphs. The transitions "as a result" and "therefore" express an effect and they could be added at the beginning of the last sentence of the paragraph provided because this sentence expresses a result of what has been manifested in the previous sentences. In some of the previous sentences, such as "This is unfair", the writer presents to the reader the reasons that lead her/him to think that students should wear uniforms.

ANSWERED AT 18/01/2020 - 11:21 AM

QUESTION POSTED AT 18/01/2020 - 11:21 AM

I need help with this one. Kites: Birds of Glory As a rule, raptors, or birds of prey, are among the most admired and adored birds in the world. From the California condor to the snowy owl, few birds compare to the tigers of the air: the great hunters whose beauty and skill have inspired art and literature for centuries. The most glorious feathers of the peacock or the vibrant plumage of a bunting cannot compete with the power of a peregrine falcon or the determination of an osprey. Included in this group of hunters, however, is one bird of prey that is little known but equally impressive. The kites of the world are generally smaller than most raptors, but just as astonishing in skill and grace as any other hunter of the skies. Most people think of paper or cloth structures flown with string from the ground when the word 'kite' is used. In addition to these popular toys, kite can also refer to a type of raptor. Kites have a small head, a short beak and long narrow wings and tail. Kites can be found all over the world in mostly warm regions. Kites live on a variety of prey-from insects to small rodents or reptiles. Some kites eat only one kind of prey. Kites are generally masterful in the air and represent a group of birds that are among the most acrobatic of fliers. Two of the most familiar kites in the Southern United States are the swallow-tailed kite and the Mississippi kite. The Mississippi kite is rather plain to look at: a light brown and gray body with a buff or white colored head. But to watch a Mississippi kite fly is to watch a ballet in the air. These raptors eat primarily flying insects, so they do most of their hunting on the wing. As you might imagine, catching flying insects requires a great deal of agility and speed. If you are lucky enough to see one in flight, you will be amazed at the quick turns, graceful moves, and speedy pursuits of this bird. Look for them above large fields, especially during the summer. The swallow-tailed kite, also common in the South, is more easily identifiable and often seen flying over roads. With black wings and tail, white head and body, and a forked or swallow-like tail, this raptor is just as acrobatic as the Mississippi kite. Swallow-tailed kites like flying over highways in the summer as they can take advantage of the thermals, or columns of warmed air, that rise above the pavement. Once they have climbed to sufficient height, swallow-tails will glide, looking for snakes and reptiles and insects. They also eat small rodents, frogs, and other birds on occasion. Watching a swallow-tail fly is a lot like watching a gymnast perform a floor routine. Rarely flapping its wings, it uses its forked tail to make sharp turns, trace circles in the sky, or simply maintain a heading. Skilled, accomplished, and graceful, this bird is as entertaining as it is beautiful. Both kites are known to eat while flying, unlike most other birds of prey. This practice conserves energy and allows them to hunt almost continuously. While these kites are not listed as endangered, they are rare and in some states are listed as critical. Loss of habitat is the main reason for the decline. If you are lucky enough to see one, count yourself among the few. These magnificent birds are a sight you won't soon forget. How does the author develop the idea that kites are skillful fliers? Use details and quotations from the text to support your answer.

The author develops the idea that kites are skillful fliers starting from how they hunt for food. Kites hunt for food while flying which requires agility and speed. They're also described to make quick turns, graceful flying moves, and speedy pursuits.
