Read the text excerpt to answer the question that follows: "I say, now is the time to press this right. It may be asked, "Why do you want it? Some men have got along very well without it. Women have not this right." Shall we justify one wrong by another? This is a sufficient answer. Shall we at this moment justify the deprivation of the Negro of the right to vote, because someone else is deprived of that privilege?" Which amendment satisfied the goal described in this statement? A. Fifteenth Amendment B. Nineteenth Amendment (THIS ANSWER IS WRONG) C. Twenty-fourth Amendment D. Twenty-sixth Amendment

Answer: The right answer is the A) The Fifteenth Amendment.

Explanation: This is an excerpt from Frederick Douglass' speech “What the Black Man Wants,” which he gave in 1865, before the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society in Boston. In it, he requested that African Americans be granted the right to vote, or enfranchisement, claiming that the fact that women, too, were not allowed to vote was not a justification for such deprivation.

The Fifteenth Amendmnent to the U.S Constitution declares that "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." This is specifically what Frederick Douglass was defending in his speech - the other Amendments also protect the right to vote, but based on other premises.

QUESTION POSTED AT 27/02/2020 - 02:53 PM

Read the excerpt from Grendel. Then they would fight. Spears flying, swords whonking, arrows raining from the windows and doors of the meadhall and the edge of the woods. Horses reared and fell over screaming, ravens flew, crazy as bats in a fire, men staggered, gesturing wildly, making speeches, dying or sometimes pretending to be dying, sneaking off. Sometimes the attackers would be driven back, sometimes they’d win and burn the meadhall down, sometimes they’d capture the king of the meadhall and make his people give weapons and gold rings and cows. It was confusing and frightening, not in a way I could untangle. I was safe in my tree, and the men who fought were nothing to me, except of course that they talked in something akin to my language, which meant that we were, incredibly, related. I was sickened, if only at the waste of it: all they killed—cows, horses, men—they left to rot or burn. Which statement best describes Grendel’s perspective? A. He enjoys watching the violent men kill one another. B. He admires the powerful weapons and strong men. C. He wishes to be part of the excitement somehow. D.He feels disgusted by the wasteful nature of war.

Answer:

D. He feels disgusted by the wasteful nature of war.

Explanation:

John Gardner wrote a reworking of the famous epic poem "Beowulf" but from the perspective of the antagonist. He gave the narrative voice to Grendel, the monster that was the enemy in Beowulf.

The excerpt given in the question shows how Grendel really feel about the actions of man and that of war-times in particular. He points that he "was sickened, if only at the waste of it: all they killed—cows, horses, men—they left to rot or burn." While noticing their difference, pointing out that "the men who fought were nothing to (him)", he nevertheless accepts that "they talked in something akin to my language, which meant that we were, incredibly, related". But he was also at the same time disgusted by the wasteful nature of war that men wage against each other.
