In a classroom of 20 students, what democratic form of governance makes the most sense?

Answer:

In a classroom where there are only 20 students, which is a small number, the democratic form of governance that would make the most sense to use would be: Direct democracy.

Explanation:

Direct democracy is defined as the system of government in which the people have the direct election of the person, or people, who will represent them and they also have direct influence on the policies and decisions that the government and its representatives will have. It is also known as a pure democracy, in that there are no intermediaries between the people, who are the power behind the government, and the government itself. The people are, in reality, the decision-makers, and the ones on who final decisions are also based through direct vote for representatives. This type of system is very useful in small nations where the population, and landmass where they inhabit, is not so extensive that communication and contact between the government and the governed is impossible. This is why it would be a good way of governance for a small group of 20 students.

The European Age of Exploration would not have been possible without the astrolabe and the compass, both of which were adapted from... A) African kings. B) Muslim sailors. C) British merchants. D) Byzantine scholars.

The correct answer is B. Both the astrolabe and the compass were adapted from Muslim sailors.

The astrolabe was used by navigators, astronomers and scientists in general to locate the stars and observe their movement, to determine the time from latitude or, vice versa, to find out the latitude by knowing the time. It also serves to measure distances by triangulation.

Muslim sailors often also used it to calculate the prayer time and locate the address of Mecca. During the XVI to XVIII centuries, it was used as the main instrument of maritime navigation, until the invention of the sextant, in 1750.

In the 8th century it was already widely known in the Islamic world. It arrived to Europe in the 12th century through Al-Andalus.

The compass is an orientation instrument that uses a magnetic needle to indicate the Earth's magnetic north. Its operation is based on terrestrial magnetism, so it points to the magnetic south that corresponds to the geographic north and is unproductive in the north and south polar zones due to the convergence of the force lines of the earth's magnetic field.

The compass was invented in China, and was brought to the Middle East by Muslim merchants through the Silk Road. In Europe, the compass is officially known since the Renaissance, allegedly taken there by the Muslim invaders of southern Spain.

QUESTION POSTED AT 15/12/2019 - 05:17 PM

Italy and Niger have opposite population demographics: Italy has an aging population with a high life expectancy, and Niger has a very young population with a low life expectancy. a. True b. False

The statement is true.

In Italy, according to the latest ISTAT (Italian National Institute of Statistics) surveys as of 1 January 2017, young people up to 14 years old are almost 100,000 less than in 2016 and represent 13.5% of the total. People over 65 years of age are increasing by 160,000 and now represent 22.6% of the population. Demographically speaking Italy is still one of the countries with the lowest birth rate in the world; in 2016 the average number of births per woman is estimated at 1.34, down compared to 1.46 in 2010, which represented the highest value since 1984. In 2016, life expectancy for men was up to 80.1 years and for women it was of 84.7 years. So we can see an aging population (almost a quarter of the population belongs to the older adults group) with a high life expectancy, just like the statement said.

About Niger, according to the statistical information of the CIA World Factbook, the population of Niger estimated to 2010 is 15 306 252 inhabitants, of which 49.6% are in the range 0 to 14 years, 48.1% between 15 and 64 years and 2.3% with more than 65 years. Life expectancy is 44 years and the average of children per woman is 7.37, the second highest rate in the world, which is causing a population increase never seen in the history of this poor country. In the same way, its birth rate is the highest in the world, with 51.6 births per 1000 inhabitants, although the mortality rate is also high, ranking eighteen worldwide with 14.83 deaths per thousand inhabitants. Infant mortality is one of the highest in the world, with 116.66 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants, and its life expectancy is one of the lowest. So in this case the statement is also correct.
