You develop active immunity to a pathogen by

Active immunity can be natural or artificially developed. Naturally acquired - a person is exposed to a live pathogen, develops an immune response - and then creates memory T and B cells. Artificially acquired - a person is given a vaccine (which contains the antigen). This stimulates the same response, without the symptoms of the disease.

Pathogens may enter you but there is a layer (almost like a wall) that they will have to get through first (in the skin) bacteria can also kill pathogens. The immune system will produce antibodies that will also kill off pathogens.

PLEASE HELP!!! ASAP 30 POINTS!! Why are the Galapagos Islands important in our understanding of how species adapt to their enviornment? Discuss it's geographic location, what Darwin concluded, and the research of the Grants.

Darwin’s research showed that finches beaks are different to fit their food source. It also started the theories of evolution and natural selection. The Grant’s research on the Galapagos Islands showed that evolution exists and can happen over a course of two years. They proved Darwin’s theories are true. Since all the plants and animals are native to the islands, they had to adapt to the new food source and climate. Beaks, size, etc. are all changes made to these organisms to be able to live on the islands.

The Galapagos Islands are located in Ecuador and sit on the Pacific Ocean. The Galapagos Islands were formed from 3 million to 5 million years ago. Volcanic eruptions typically shield volcanoes formed the islands. They are located over a “particularly hot mantel” that causes volcanic activity. The outcome of many eruptions were islands because the left overs were pushed to the surface. The Galapagos islands are pretty big reaching an area of 3,093 miles. The temperatures range from 69 to 84 degrees creating a typically warm climate.

Darwin studied medicine at age 16, but became fascinated specimens around the globe. He developed theories of natural selection and evolution. While he was on the Galapagos islands, he studied thirteen different species of finches.

He observed finches and different beak structures. He observed their ability to consume foods such as nuts, bugs, and fruit. He concluded all were related to their beaks. For example, long, slender beaks are good to reach in the flowers of a cactus.

Charles concluded that the finches beaks are examples of adaptive radiation. To fit in the island, they had to adapt to the conditions. This lead to Charles’ theory of natural selection.

Charles came to the conclusion of evolution and natural selection. Natural selection is the process where organisms adapt to their environment to survive and produce more offspring. Evolution is where different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed. These theories have changed science forever and leave today’s scientists marveling of his theories.

I hope this helps:)

Discuss the process of the chloride shift in both the respiratory and the digestive systems.

Carbon dioxide is generated in tissues as a byproduct of normal metabolism. It dissolves in blood plasma to form carbonic acid (H2CO3); red blood cell (RBC) carbonic anhydrase catalyzes this reaction. Carbonic acid then spontaneously dissociates to form bicarbonate (HCO3−) and a hydrogen ion (H+). In response to the decrease in intracellular pCO2, more CO2 passively diffuses into the cell.

Cell membranes are generally impermeable to charged ions (i.e. H+, HCO3− ) but RBCs are able to exchange bicarbonate for chloride using the anion exchanger protein Band 3. Thus, the rise in intracellular bicarbonate leads to bicarbonate export and chloride intake. The term "chloride shift" refers to this exchange. Consequently, chloride concentration is lower in systemic venous blood than in systemic arterial blood: high venous pCO2 leads to bicarbonate production in RBCs, which then leaves the RBC in exchange for chloride coming in.[2]

Name a unique trait about each planet in our solar system

Mercury: It is the closest planet to the sun, so it orbits the sun very quickly just in 88 days. Its surface is gray to orange in color and it is covered with craters. It is a small planet, just 4850 kilometers (~3000 miles) in diameter. The side of its surface which is facing the sun is extremely hot as 700oK.

2. Venus: Its surface is a brownish-yellow color because of its thick atmosphere which is composed of largely of sulfuric acid and CO2. Its size is a little over 12,000 kilometers (7300 miles) in diameter. It rotates the sun in 243.

3. Earth: It rotates the sun every 365 days (year) and rotates in its axis every 24 hours (day). Its size is a little more than 12,000 kilometers in diameter. This planet is different form other planets as it maintains life on its surface. It has a moon.

4. Mars: It takes 687 days to revolve around the sun. Its surface is covered with craters, volcanoes, and large canyons and it has a very cold atmosphere. It has two moons.

5. Jupiter: It is the largest planet of the solar system as a diameter of 142,980 kilometers. It orbits the sun every 12 years.

6. Saturn: It is a large planet as 120,536 kilometers. It orbits the sun in 12 years. It is well-known for its system of three rings, it has also 47 moons.

7. Uranus: It rotates the sun in 84 years, its size is 51,118 kilometers in diameter. It is surrounded by a system of nine rings.

8. Neptune: Its size is 49,500 kilometers in diameter. It orbits the sun every 165 years.

1. How do your skeleton and muscular system work together, 2. What type of muscle tissue would you find in the heart? blood vessels? toes?

The answer to your first question involves a connection between your actions and your brain. Your bones and muscles work together through a series of impulses and signals communicated between the brain and skeletal muscles. In order to move, the nervous system then sends signals a skeletal muscle to contract. When the muscle contracts, this movement causes the attached bone to follow.

And as for your second question,
The muscle tissue in your heart is cardiac, the muscle tissue in your blood vessels is smooth, and the muscle tissue in your toes is skeletal.

I hope this helps you, have a nice day!
