What is ironic about the ending of the poem "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson?

Answered by admin AT 29/01/2020 - 05:19 PM

Irony is a rhetorical device in which an event that appears to be something in the surface is in fact completely different to the reality. In this case, the poem suggests that Richard Cory is the perfect man. He was a clean, slim gentleman. He was also rich and educated, and everyone wanted to be him. The reader, therefore, imagines that Cory has the perfect life. However, the irony at the end is that Cory ends up killing himself, proving that he did not have the perfect life everyone thought he had.

Which line from the poem contains a metaphor? Worry makes an ache— stomach swims, head throbs . . . It’s an unwanted guest Like an empty piggy bank

A metaphor compares things WITHOUT using like or as. similes use like or as.
the first one, with "stomach swims", seems like personification, giving an object human qualities.
I would go with the second one, some assume a simile to branch underneath metaphor, I'd assume.
the first one isn't comparing anything, so it's probably the second choice.

20 POINTS***** I see something of God each hour of the twenty-four, and each moment then, In the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass. (lines 1281 – 1282) What poetic technique does Whitman illustrate in the passage from "Song of Myself"? rhyming lines end-stopped lines regular meter regular rhythm

The correct answer is B. End-stopped lines

Explanation:

In poetry, an end-stopped line is a poetic device in which there is a pause after the end of a phrase, sentence or verse, this pause is usually given by a punctuation mark such as comma, period or semicolon. This also means the phrase or clause in verses with end-stopped lines are mainly complete phrases or clauses, therefore the meaning of them does not continue in the following verse but ends with the pause introduced by the punctuation mark, which makes each line be a complete, small unit of meaning.

In the case of the excerpt from the poem "Song of Myself" by Whitman it is possible to find end-stopped lines as each complete idea is separated by commas for example after the phrases "I see something of God each hour of the twenty-four" and "and in my own face in the glass" the poet places a comma or a period to introduce a pause and mark a complete idea, which makes this poem be divided into complete clauses separated by commas, which is what end-stopped lines are about. Thus, the poetic technique that can be found in the passage from "Song of Myself" is end-stopped lines.

QUESTION POSTED AT 18/02/2020 - 09:42 AM

1In 1948, American artist Andrew Wyeth unveiled his painting Christina’s World. The painting shows a woman in a field. Her face is turned away from the artist, and she is crawling across the pasture. She is making her way toward an old farmhouse, which is visible in the distance. 2Wyeth created the scene using tempera. Tempera is an Italian word with Latin origins. It comes from the Latin temperare, which means "to mix." Tempera is paint made by mixing dye and a binding material. Egg yolks are commonly used as a binder in tempera paint. The image was painted on a flat panel covered with gesso. Gesso is a powdered, chalk-like substance that artists mix with glue. They often use it as a first coat of paint before they apply tempera paints. The word gesso comes from the Italian word for "chalk." 3The woman shown in Christina’s World appears rather young, but in real life, the subject was a middle-aged woman. Wyeth, who lived in the Maine countryside, looked out his window one day and saw his neighbor crawling across the pasture. Many think that the woman suffered from a disease called polio, but no one knows for sure. Whether she was or was not ill, she was unable move her body from the waist down, which is why she had to pull herself across the field by her arms. Similarly, the woman pictured in Wyeth's painting has some sort of illness that has affected her muscles. 4Most of the colors used to create Christina’s World are earth tones. The field is a shade of gold, the farmhouse is dark gray, and the sky is cloudy ash gray. The subject’s dress is very light pink and is the brightest spot in the whole scene. This splash of color shows how bold and strong the woman in the field is even though her world seems rather lonely and difficult. 5Christina’s World is a very moving work of art. The painting of a lone figure in a barren field presents an image of great struggle. The woman appears to be making her way to the farmhouse on the horizon, which lies at a distance from where she is. Though the house is far away, the woman looks toward it as her goal. Having her face focused on the destination in front of her suggests her great determination. While the painting shows a struggle, it also reveals the courage and strength all people possess. The author of this passage is considering changing the first sentence of the fourth paragraph from its current sentence to the following one: "The painting is worth more than $100,000 and currently hangs in the New York City's Museum of Modern Art." Would this sentence work effectively as a transition from paragraph 3 to paragraph 4? A) No, because the sentence properly belongs at the end of the last paragraph of the essay. B) Yes, because the sentence provides information that would be of interest to the general reader. C) No, because the fourth paragraph is primarily about the colors of the painting--not its current value or location. Eliminate D) Yes, because the sentence provides information that looks outward from the painting to its importance in the real world.

Answer:

C.

Explanation:

The correct answer is the following statement: No, because the fourth paragraph is primarily about the colors of the painting--not its current value or location. The starting sentence of the fourth paragraph is perfectly appropriate as written because it introduces the main topic of paragraph four: the colors of Wyeth's painting.

What are the poetic devices in the poem women by alice walker

"Women" by Alice Walker is a poem about strong women. Walker says that this poem was written for her mother, who is an important woman in her life. Walkers mother was an African American slave, so it was extremely important for her to stay strong for her children and for her family. I think that this poem is trying to convey that women of her mothers generation had to be tough, but were also loving and caring at the same time.

Read the excerpt from Jackie Robinson’s letter to President Eisenhower. As the chief executive of our nation, I respectfully suggest that you unwittingly crush the spirit of freedom in Negroes by constantly urging forbearance and give hope to those pro-segregation leaders like Governor Faubus who would take from us even those freedoms we now enjoy. Your own experience with Governor Faubus is proof enough that forbearance and not eventual integration is the goal the pro-segregation leaders seek. Which best explains the purpose of Robinson’s letter? A. to appeal to President Eisenhower for the termination of Governor Faubus from public office B. to bring the problem of inequality among African American communities to President Eisenhower’s attention C. to request immediate action from President Eisenhower in furthering equal rights for African Americans D. to ask President Eisenhower about the eventual removal of all Jim Crow laws

The best and most correct answer among the choices provided by the question is the third choice "to request immediate action from President Eisenhower in furthering equal rights for African Americans"
