What was the major effect of the Great Schism?

QUESTION POSTED AT 15/12/2019 - 10:44 PM

Answered by admin AT 15/12/2019 - 10:44 PM

The major effect of the Great Schism was the division between what is now the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Churches.

The theological thoughts of the East were different from those of the West. The Eastern theology was based in Greek philosophy, while the Western theology had its roots on Roman Law.

This main difference led to misunderstandings and theological disputes, and at last, the final break came in 1054.

There were attempts of reconciliation but none of them were successful.

Such event was the scandal resulting from the arrest of five burglars in the office of the Democratic National Committee in June 1972 that were connected to President Nixon’s reelection campaign. The burglars had been caught wiretapping phones and stealing documents.

Afterward, the President came to be in trouble with justice for trying to cover the crime and the documents, so, in order to avoid impeachment, he soon decided to resign from office. These events, which were clear proof of the government's corruption, increased American's skepticism about politics and the government.

In administering the laws of Congress I shall keep steadily in view the limitations as well as the extent of the Executive power trusting thereby to discharge the functions of my office without transcending its authority. ... In such measures as I may be called on to pursue in regard to the rights of the separate States I hope to be animated by a proper respect for those sovereign members of our Union, ... This I shall aim at the more anxiously both because it will facilitate the extinguishment of the national debt, the unnecessary duration of which is incompatible with real independence, ... that the spirit of equity, caution and compromise in which the Constitution was formed requires that the great interests of agriculture, commerce, and manufactures should be equally favored ... As long as our Government is administered for the good of the people, and is regulated by their will; as long as it secures to us the rights of person and of property, liberty of conscience and of the press, it will be worth defending ..."
